What is the FGCMF

The Galician Federation for Maritime and Fluvial Culture (FGCMF) was born in 1994 with one objective, to socialize and to highlight the culture of the sea and rivers. The Federation comprises more than 45 associations and organizations related to maritime and fluvial heritage, and its territory of work includes Galicia (northwest Spain) and northern Portugal.

All work is done by volunteers, and now members of the Federation have more than 150 vessels of all types of length, some are restored and other boats are replicas of types with presence in the zone of action of the Federation.

Produces exhibitions and publications to publicize their work and the wealth of sea and river galician culture, and maintains a website with updates on all aspects of maritime and river culture in Galicia (culturamaritima.org). Some of the member associations also produce their own publications and websites.

The FGCMF participates in national and international events, being invited in Douarnenez in 2000 and 2004, and representing Galicia as guest of honor at Brest 2008. And is associate in the european project Dorna.

Organized by the FGCMF every two years the "Encontro de Embarcacions Tradicionais de Galicia" (Galician Traditional Boats Festival), is the premier event of its kind in the Iberian peninsula, involving more than 200 boats and nearly 900 crew members from Spain, Portugal, France, etc.
